in God I trust

In God, whose word I praise, in The Lord, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me?  (Psalm 56:10)

Man can do a lot. Man can oppress, slander, and kill. Man can attack, violate, and corrupt. Man can steal, lie, and commit genocide. David knew this all too well. He mentions some of these very things in the surrounding verses. Most are a constant theme throughout his Psalms.

Yet, David knows that because he trusts in God, man can not touch him where it really counts. Jesus admonishes well in Matthew when he says,

“And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul…” (Matthew 10:28)

Like David, if we are a child of God our soul rests in the most secure place in the universe, in the loving hands of our Heavenly Father. While man can do all kinds of evils against us bodily, they can do nothing to harm our soul. There is absolutely no one or thing that can separate us from the love of God.

“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39)

We too have reason not to be afraid because of the security we have in God in Christ Jesus . Like David before us, we can confidently say, “in God I trust” for “what can man do to me?”.
