Coffee Cup Theology – the first sip
Hello friends, and welcome to Coffee Cup Theology.
There’s something about the quiet of early morning—the soft light through the window, the scent of freshly ground beans, and that first swirl of hot water over the coffee grounds. For a moment, the world slows down. That first sip? It feels like an invitation to pause, breathe, and think.
Coffee Cup Theology is for anyone who loves coffee and the Bible.
Slow, careful thinking seems be a lost art in our day. And the Bible is no longer treated as the sacred word of God, but more like a magic 8 ball.
A few years ago, we got tired of seeing verses taken out of context and printed on a coffee cup. We got to thinking and realized good theology is the result of careful reflection, and that takes time. But most people don’t have the time to sit and think for long periods.
So we challenged ourselves to slow down and meditate on God and His Word together, with a cup of coffee. We’re learning theology over the long haul, one sip at a time. And we want to share it with you.
That’s what Coffee Cup Theology is all about. It’s the place where good coffee meets good theology. No out of context verses, and no rushing—just thoughtful sips of God’s Word .
Coming Up
We’ve been thinking about this for a while and we’re excited to share with you what we’ve got planned.
First, we plan to post once a week in the form of both blog posts and podcasts. We’ll publish both at the same time. The podcast will be us reading the blog post and then discussing it.
We’ve got a few different formats planned.
Scripture Immersion
First, and most often, we’ll immerse (a little baptist and coffee humor there) ourselves in the text of Scripture. We’ll pick a verse and consider it in context. Sometimes we’ll pick verses that have been abused and misapplied commonly. Other times we’ll look at verses that are often ignored because they’re difficult or uncomfortable.
Theology Review
Secondly, we plan to read through some theological books together and discuss the doctrines and ideas we find. We’ll be reading Bavinck, Vos, Pink, Owen, Coxe, and others. Mostly older, Puritan theologians, or solid reformed thinkers. We’ll take them slow, a paragraph or two at a time and really ponder what these voices from the past have to say to modern readers today.
Group Discussions
From time to time, we’ll have discussions with other people from our church. We may have a discussion following a men’s or women’s study if we think the conversation will be beneficial to us all. We’ve got some ideas and people in mind for these discussions, and we’re eager to try it out.
Interviews
We also plan to do the occasional interview with pastors, authors, and coffee industry people.
So, pour yourself a cup, settle in, and join us as we:
taste and see that the LORD is good;
Blessed is the man who trusts in Him! [Psalm 34.8]
