Weekend Reads 4/18

Here are a few links we found interesting or worthwhile this week, and we pass them on to you for reading over the weekend.

Keep It To Yourself – “You’re not just asking me to keep my personal beliefs to myself. You’re asking me to totally disregard you as a person made in God’s image. You’re asking me to look at you and feel a complete absence of love.”

The Assumption We Cannot Afford – “We must teach the Bible, and we must do so in such a way that those sitting under our teaching learn to feed themselves rather than rely solely on us to feed them.”

What Does It Mean to Know Nothing except Christ and Him Crucified? – “You might forget other things that I teach you, but don’t ever forget the cross, because it was on the cross, through the cross, and by the cross that our Savior performed His work of redemption and gathered His people for eternity.”

Mission In Everyday Life – “When can we integrate life and mission? Rather than segregating people into different time slots or adding things to busy schedules, everyday mission happens when we redeem everyday moments.”

And since today is Good Friday, we’ll leave you with this poem written circa 1707-1709 by Isaac Watts.

The Lord’s Supper Instituted

’Twas on that dark, that doleful night
When powers of earth and hell arose
Against the Son of God’s delight,
And friends betrayed Him to His foes:

Before the mournful scene began,
He took the bread, and blessed, and brake:
What love through all His actions ran!
What wondrous words of grace He spake!

“This is My body, broke for sin;
Receive and eat the living food:”
Then took the cup, and blessed the wine;
“’Tis the new cov’nant in My blood.”

For us His flesh with nails was torn,
He bore the scourge, He felt the thorn;
And justice poured upon His head
Its heavy vengeance in our stead.

For us His vital blood was spilt,
To buy the pardon of our guilt,
When, for black crimes of biggest size,
He gave His soul a sacrifice.

“Do this,” He cried, “till time shall end,
In memory of your dying Friend;
Meet at My table, and record
The love of your departed Lord.”

Jesus, Thy feast we celebrate,
We show Thy death, we sing Thy Name,
Till Thou return, and we shall eat
The marriage supper of the Lamb.
