read along: Hebrews

This is our first planned read along. Beginning Monday, 7 January, I’ll be reading through the book of Hebrews at the following pace, and encourage you to join me. I won’t be posting every day, but will post an average of 3 times a week. If you follow along with the reading schedule below, on the days I do blog, my writing should match up with your reading for the day.

7 Jan – Hebrews 1
8 Jan – Hebrews 2
9 Jan – Hebrews 3
10 Jan – Hebrews 4
11 Jan – Hebrews 5

14 Jan – Hebrews 6
15 Jan – Hebrews 7
16 Jan – Hebrews 8
17 Jan – Hebrews 9
18 Jan – Hebrews 10

21 Jan – Hebrews 11
22 Jan – Hebrews 12
23 Jan – Hebrews 13

a few suggestions

Use this weekend to read the entire book in one sitting at some point. It’s equivalent to reading about 12 pages in a normal book and should take you about 25 minutes. Make notes while you’re reading, and outline the book after you’ve read it. Don’t look at an outline in a study bible until after you’ve outlined it yourself. Do the hard work of thinking about it for yourself!

Use the two weekends during the reading schedule to either catch up, and/or go back and reread the entire book in one sitting again. This will help keep the daily readings in the larger context of the book.

Each day as you read take notes in a journal or notebook. Review the previous day’s notes before reading the next chapter. Again, context is key to understanding.

Remember that the chapter divisions, verses a well, were not in the original. They were added later for reference purposes and don’t necessarily indicate hard breaks in the author’s thought process, so neither should they in ours. But they do serve as convenient reference marks so we know where we’re at.

I look forward to reading Hebrews along with you, and encourage you to share your thoughts and insights in the comment section of each blog post as we go along!

And don’t forget to brew the coffee!
